Beloved readers/followers of this blog,

I haven’t updated this blog for quite a while now.  I was amazed that some good people, somehow, are following me and probably they’re looking for fresh news about Manny Pacquaio.  While I, too, was engrossed and overwhelmed by the recent success of Mr. Pacman, I got myself a bit busy enriching myself, with new found knowledge–and a NEW QUEST!

‘GET OUT OF THE RAT RACE’ thing.  Have anyone of you seen the “Parable of the Pipeline” by Burke Hedges?  We’ll, in a nutshell, it’s about being smart.  Working smart.  Becoming financially free.  Let money work for you.  Passive income.

Manny Pacquiao

Mandaluyong City – Manny Pacquiao’s final training day in Manila went smoothly Saturday morning at Gerry Penalosa’s Gym in Mandaluyong City. Pacquiao underwent a ten round sparring session that was closed to the local media.

But Dong Secuya and I managed to enter the gym after the Manny sparred to catch the rest of his routine.

Former two division world champ Dodie Penalosa, who is a member of Team Pacquiao, said that Manny sparred for ten rounds with Shawn Porter and Urbano Antillon. When asked if he agrees with Trainer Freddie Roach’s prediction that Pacquiao will knock out Cotto in round one if he doesn’t run, Penalosa said “ Cotto is not a runner. He’ll just step back then trade punches. It could happen.” Continue here….

Drian Francisco

Drian Francisco

For Diomedes “Joe” Francisco, being a boxer of his time was eventful. It was Erbito Salavarria, the former world boxing champion, who saw Francisco’s potential during his amateur days. After only 2 successful fights as an amateur, Salavarria decided to give Joe his first crack as a professional.

Joe turned professional in 1977. He had a total of twenty nine fights in his whole professional career (26 wins 2 losses and 1 draw). He then became the number three contender for Orient Pacific Boxing Federation. Acknowledged by some as a thinking boxer because of the way he analyzes his opponent before delivering his own big blows.  Continue here….

MANILA, Philippines – Fresh from demolishing Indonesia’s Maragin Marbun, newly crowned interim WBC International featherweight champion Rey (Boom Boom) Bautista said recently his dream is to avenge his first round knockout loss to Daniel Ponce de Leon and he’s even willing to face the Mexican in a rematch without pay.

But ALA Boxing Gym owner Tony Aldeguer said he’s holding Bautista back from rushing into a return bout against the former WBO superbantamweight champion who decisioned Gerry Peñalosa in 2007.

“Ponce de Leon is Boom Boom’s main target,” said Aldeguer. “Like Boom Boom, Ponce de Leon is now fighting as a featherweight. That’s Boom Boom’s dream – to avenge his defeat to Ponce de Leon whom he fought with pain in his left hand. He’s learned a lot since losing that fight. It’ll be a big deal to bring Ponce de Leon to Manila or Cebu for a fight but if we can get sponsors to support the promotion, I think it can be done.”  Continue here….

Boom Boom Bautista

IN truth, the work of an observer, a fight fan or a critic is simple and easy.

The object of our insatiable pre-occupation is the athlete who tirelessly grinds it out day after day, and sometimes well into the night, in his endless quest for perfection-if at all that is attainable.

And all that we have to do is partake of what has been offered- for us to criticize, laud or leer at our pleasure.

That is not to say of course, that it doesn’t serve a purpose.

For it is beyond cavil that the athlete needs the critic to give him an honest assessment of the body of work that he provides.

SUBJECTIVE. In the case of Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista, my honest impression based on the feedback that I’m getting is that a lot of innuendo often accompanies his performance.  Continue here….

Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol – When I told Dong Secuya, the man responsible for www.philboxing.com and www.mannypacquiao.ph, about my apprehensions of a possible Pinoy-vs-Pinoy showdown between Gerry “Fearless” Peñalosa and Z “The Dream” Gorres in the not-so-distant future, his response was rather simple and calm, but very much packed with reassuring wisdom. “It’s a clear indication that we’re definitely in the Golden Age of Philippine Boxing.” That was his very comforting rejoinder. I am an avid fan of both Peñalosa and Gorres and it is but normal for a devoted follower to hope that his heroes would avoid losing as much and as long as possible. Putting two of them inside the squared circle pretty much assures a loss to either one… and that was basically the cause for my trepidation. Nonetheless, Secuya’s words definitely transformed my uneasiness into a state of recently-realized elation. Indeed, the Philippines has been a very prolific producer of boxing talents with great potentials, especially recently that the sports’ most important figure in Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao comes from the Islands himself. A handful of these potentials have been lurking in the shadows of their more popular compatriots.  Continue here….

The left was right after all.

This was the biggest message that Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista sent out Friday night to announce that he was ready for another run at big-time boxing. After an 11-month lay-off and surgery done on his left wrist, Boom Boom proved that along with his right hand, his left is also just as effective and can be relied on to send boxers to sleep. Boom Boom knocked out Indonesian junior featherweight champion Marangin “Dinamita” Marbun in the seventh round for the interim WBC International featherweight championship Friday night as ALA Promotions made a big comeback at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.  Continue here….

Ciso ‘Kid Terrible’ Morales will face Miguel Angel Gonzales Piedras ( 10W-1L, 4 KO’s) of Mexico in a non-title bout in the undercard of Marvin Sonsona’s first defense of his title against Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico. Casino Rama of Ontario will host the bouts which will be part of the tenth edition of RUMBLE AT RAMA on November 21.

The lone loss of Piedras happened in 2007, a six round decision against Ramon Maas. He has won six straight fights by decision since then. Just like Morales, he has yet to fight outside of his country.   Continue here….

Bautista vs. Marbun

If Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista listened to his detractors and critics, he would have hung his gloves up and pursued something else by now.

If “Boom Boom” believed those who said he did not have what it takes to be a world champion, then he could have easily quit after his two devastating losses.

But “Boom Boom” Bautista believes in himself- even when those who used to believe in him have turned their backs on him.

Winners never quit, and quitters never win. Manny Pacquiao lost twice before he even made his mark in the US. And even then, he had to suffer another loss to Mexican legend Erik Morales only to bounce back stronger than ever.  Continue here….

CEBU CITY — Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista fulfilled his promise that the fight will not reach the tenth round and scored a dramatic seventh round TKO win over Marangin “Dinamita” Marbun of Indonesia.

"Boom Boom's" Killer Stance

Both boxers tasted each other’s jabs and right hands in the opening round but Bautista also mixed in left hooks to the body with his offense. But Marbun showed he was no patsy as he took Bautista’s punches well and landed effective counters in the second.

In the third round, a left hook staggered Bautista but he bounced back and hurt Marbun with his own left hook and right straight. Furious exchanges ensued. Marbun set up his offense behind a sharp left jab and Bautista looked to be in trouble in the 4th as he hit the canvas but it was ruled a slip by referee Bruce McTavish.  Continue here….

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (October 16) – Reigning World Boxing Organization oriental flyweight king Richie Mepranum is again going to see action after almost a year of hiatus.

Mepranum of Maasim, Sarangani

Mepranum of Maasim, Sarangani

Mepranum, whose last fight was against American Cesar Lopez in December last year, has been slated to go against a still to be named opponent in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Cotto welterweight bout on November 14 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

His manager, Maasim Mayor Jojo Lopez, said Mepranum is in top shape and excellent physical condition despite the long layoff and will not disappoint Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank, who worked out the inclusion of the 22-year old boxer from Sarangani in the Las Vegas super fight.

In his fight against Lopez last year, Mepranum bucked cold weather and jet lag to fashion out a convincing unanimous decision against the wily veteran American boxer.  Continue here….
